Dalton team ready to help with emergencies

AFTER five months of training, the Dalton Community First Responders will be on-call and ready to help the emergency services from Sunday. The Dalton CFR team is made up of 10 volunteers, including three doctors, who live and work in the town.

As of Sunday, two team members at any one time will be on-call 24-hours-a-day, responding to calls from the NWAS where time can make the difference between life and death. Rich Nicholls, co-founder of South Lakes Search and Rescue, of which the Dalton CFR team is part, says it will be raring to go if called upon. He said: “This is a huge step forward for us. “The Dalton Community First Responders team have been working hard for five months now in their training with the NWAS. “If you look at it from the community perspective, this is huge, because the growth of this will go across multiple boundaries, and we’re starting to look at other areas now. “Now we’ve got the Dalton responders up and running, we can start looking at moving into other areas and getting the swift water rescue and mud rescue teams in place.“The excitement within the team now is incredible.

“The amount of work that has gone into where we are today has been absolutely phenomenal, and the support we’ve had from local businesses and from Dalton Town Council and Barrow Borough Council has been great.“We’ve got all of the equipment now and everything is ready to go.”

On Monday the team visited the NWAS control centre in Preston to see how it is run and learn about the 999 calls they may be asked to respond to.Mr Nicholls said: “It was good for the team because they’ve been in training for so long. Now it has become a reality.

“The volunteers all want to do something in their local area. This is their chance to put something back into the community.”The Dalton CFR will cover the whole of Dalton and the surrounding villages, from the Elliscales roundabout, to the Millbrow roundabout, up to the Park Road roundabout.Mr Nicholls said: “It is a massive area with quite a concentration of people in it, so our service is incredibly valuable.“If you look at the population of Dalton and Newton, it’s significant. “This service is going to save lives.

“If someone has a heart attack, they need to be seen by someone in the first four minutes, or their chance of survival diminishes by 60 to 70 per cent.“If the ambulance service is busy, particularly round the Christmas and New Year period, you could be waiting 20 minutes for an ambulance. “This team is there to facilitate the ambulance service in their time of need. “The whole team is spread out across the town and can get anywhere in Dalton within four minutes. That is the whole idea of this.”

Community First Responder coordinator for SLSAR, Andrea Nicholls, says the team is fully prepared for the task ahead. She added: “Week by week at training we went through different scenarios, how to react to a live patient, work on the dummies, using the oxygen masks and what they do, etc. “Then a big thing was learning how to use the defibrillators.

“Even when we go live, training will still be attended because even though everyone has been assessed and come out with excellent reports, you still need to practise.”

Chris Thakara, team leader of the Dalton CFR, will be part of the first on call team on Sunday. He said: “It is a big responsibility, but after all the training we’ve had, we should be ready. “The whole team is a little bit nervous, but in a good way.

“We’re all just looking forward to helping out the community, and if you can save someone’s life, that’s got to be a good thing.”

The team has raised almost £5,000 since its creation earlier this year.

Funding has been provided by the Bay Radio in conjunction with English Lakes Ice Cream, Diamould, Kimberly-Clark, Dalton Carnival Committee, Dalton Town Council and Barrow Borough Council, among others.

On behalf of the management team of SLSR, Andrea Nicholls would like to thank chairman Peter Hornby, the entire 30-strong team, the founding members, Rich Nicholls, Stephen Fell, Jon Turner and Ronnie Muggridge and Bay Search and Rescue for helping them with their new rescue vehicle andtraining.

The SLSAR is now recruiting for Askam Community First Responders.

The Furness Responds to the Community

Pete Garbacz, Team Leader at the Furness in Dalton , hands over a cheque for £100 to Daltons Community First Responders Fundraising Manager Andrea Nicholls

The staff at the Dalton Branch have chosen Dalton First Responders as their Community Fundraising Challenge for 2010.They hope to raise money throughout the year by holding various fundraising events in order that the voluntary team can purchase life-saving equipment and to support the ongoing training of the First Responders.

Andrea Nicholls from Dalton First Responders told us "First Responders are volunteer members of the community who are trained to respond to emergency calls through the 999 system in conjunction with the Ambulance Service. Because First Responders are based within the community in which they live or work, they can attend the scene of an emergency in a very short time, often arriving within the first three or four minutes. We are very grateful to the Furness for their donation and for their ongoing support throughout their 2010. It shows that the Furness is committed to helping the local community."

Rob Cairns, Chief Executive of the Furness also commented "Our branches are at the heart of their community and our staff are always keen to help where they can by supporting local community projects such as Dalton First Responders - I look forward to them having a successful year with their Community Fundraising Challenge
